Culms straight, 6-16 m tall, 2-10 cm in diam., glaucous and green when young, becoming brownish green when old, nodes prominent; internodes 12-40 cm long; walls 4-10 cm thick; branches 2 at each node, rarely single.
Sheath of culm subcoriaceous, light brown, dark brown-spotted outside, margins entire; auricles of sheath inconspicuous; ligule of sheath narrow, small, aristate; blade of sheath subulate or linear-lanceolate, entire. Leaves 2-3(-5), ovate-lanceolate, 6-15 cm long, 1-2 cm broad, acute, base cuneate, densely spinulose-scabrous along one margin, outer entire, veins 5 or 6, veinlets 8 or 9, tessellate; petiole 4-6 mm long; ligule convex; sheath of leaf 3-6 cm long, glabrous outside.
Spikelets usually 2-4 at nodes, alternate, 3-4 cm long, 2-4-flowered; outer bract coriaceous, glabrous, 17 mm long, 4 mm wide, veins 13-15, hairy; paleas 11 mm long, 3 mm wide, bilobed at apex, veins 1 or 2 between keels and 3 between each keel and edge; gynoecium 9 mm long; ovary globose, glabrous; style long, dividing above into 2 feathery stigmas; stamens 3, filaments long, anthers 8 mm long; lodicules 3.3 mm long, 1.5 mm wide, glabrous outside, margins entire.
